Aloha and Welcome to Kiernan Music, home of West Hawaii's finest selection of new, used and vintage guitars and ukuleles! Our story started back in the 1970's when Founder Brian Kiernan began his training as an instrument repairman in New York. After a couple of years in NY apprenticing with both a guitar maker and a woodwind/brass repairman, Brian moved to California where he narrowed his focus to building and repairing guitars.
In the early 80's Brian and his wife moved to Colorado, where he built a home and shop in the mountains west of Boulder, and got serious about building Archtop Guitars in the style of Robert Benedetto - Kiernan Guitars was born!

This place is great! Derek and Brian are extremely knowledgeable, and very friendly. They've got excellent instruments for you to buy or just try out if you're still looking. Took my nylon string guitar in to try to deal with a buzz i couldnt find and Derek found the problem right away. Thanks you guys

I love great guitar shops, but Kiernan Music really suprised me. They are pationate about guitars and ukuleles of course, but they are also as pationate about their repair, restoration and custom build services. After talking with Derek, I will be taking my beloved '36 Hayden to him for a revitalization on my next trip to Hawaii. These guys know more about guitars and how to make them really great than any repair facility in my part of the world.

Man, what a good shopping experience. Great selection, very helpful, VERY friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. Definitely have the aloha spirit down. I knew exactly what I wanted heading in, but left with something much better. Brian really took time, to take care of me. They stayed after closing to make sure I was all set, and leaving happy with my beautiful new guitar. Much mahalo!

What a great shop! Great selection of guitars and Ukeleles along with other instruments. They also have a great luthiers workshop and do professional repairs. Such a treat to visit Kainaliu, such great food and antiquing and best of all, Kiernan Music. Brian and Dereck are true examples of running a business with Aloha. I appreciate that they are here on the Big Island and look forward to my next visit.

We stopped at this place to look at Ukuleles. We had no real intention to buy as the family plays wind instruments, but I give this place 5 stars because the person who greeted us was very friendly. He explained to us all the different types of instruments, even though it was unlikely that we were going to buys something. I would definitely come back there to buy an instrument if I needed one.

We are trained musicians from NYC (though we don't many any money at it) and were on the Big Island for our honeymoon. For a nice souvenir of our time in Hawaii, I wanted to get a nice Uke to play. Before arriving, I did some research online for Uke shops on the west coast of the Big Island and found 3 (you can see my reviews for the other 2 on their Yelp pages).
This shop was by far the best of the 3. Brian (the owner, I believe) was friendly and patient with us. He did a great job of listening to what I already knew and helped me understand what he had in stock. The stock (of Ukes) was wide, ranging from $150 to $1000+. He had no problem with us trying them out, including the upper end ones. He was forthcoming with details about the instruments and types, but not so much that I got overwhelmed. Plus, it was a very no-pressure sale.
In the end, I returned to Brian's store after visiting the other 2 stores and purchasing one from him. Plus, he even gave us a tour of his workshop where he builds guitars and ukes by hand. It's a nice quality shop with top notch customer service.

Very very extensive Ukulele selection with a price range from low $ beginner to high $$$$$ custom. If they don't have a Ukulele to fit you then, well you don't need one. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. His prices are very competitive a little higher than internet retailers. I think it is worth the little extra to get to play the actual instrument you are buying and to be assured it is set up and ready to go. They also have a very nice selection of new and used guitars priced right. If you want a quality music store with old time personal service look no further than Kiernan.

Had a good time stopping by here to get a ukulele for the husband. The owner was very nice to talk with, he invited some people into the workshop room and playing different types for us to see how they sounded. The prices ranged from $75 to $8000, which was an incredible range. Took the uke on 5 different flights during the week and on the way home and it survived nicely along the way.

There were two people behind the counter and a customer in the shop. We were not greeted at all, which was unusual since we've received a friendly aloha everywhere else on this island. And even after staying a few minutes to browse, still no acknowledgement of our presence. Oh well, I will spend my money elsewhere.

I have a ton of experience dealing with musical instrument retailers and I love going to Kiernan Music. Brian is a very nice and helpful man. Some music store owners can be stingy about trying things out, but Brian was very encouraging. I ended up buying a wonderful used vintage Fender bass and a small Phil Jones bass combo and I love both. I'm very happy that there is such a nice music store that has almost everything I need. Thanks Brian.
