Jim Quist began playing the violin at the age of 8 in the Seattle School Orchestra Program. Years later, tutored by the gifted violist Karl Allred of the Utah Symphony, he prepared for university studies while performing as principal violin and viola for several local, state and national youth symphonies and string ensembles.
Any music store can order a new instrument. Unfortunately, many of them stop there. At Quist Violins we begin by hand-selecting the best instruments from our exclusive suppliers' inventories. We then professionally "set up" each instrument, which may include carving a new bridge and sound post, planing the fingerboard, shaping the nut, dressing the pegs, and installing a high-quality tailpiece and strings.
As string teachers, we understand the challenge of learning to play a new instrument and are uniquely qualified to guide you on your musical journey. The first critical step begins with the instrument you choose - and choosing quality is paramount to your success. Over the years, Quist Violins has built an extensive inventory of quality hand-selected student instruments in all sizes. Each outfit includes an instrument, bow, case, rosin, and shoulder rest or end pin stop - everything you need to start playing!
Our luthier, Mike Kenney, strives to utilize the least invasive methods in repair and restoration, and undertakes such tasks only when allowed the time necessary to achieve the best results. With expectations of advancement in technology and restoration techniques, as well as the possibility of future accidental damage, our work is generally aimed at being strong yet reversible. Finding the balance between conservation and structural integrity is what we do.

Fast, high-quality service. I rented a viola to learn with my 5th graders and it was such an amazing experience. I couldn't recommend Quist enough. I got to rent a beautiful instrument at a great price and everything was so easy! I knew nothing about music or instruments and he helped me with getting everything I needed to learn. Thank you so much!

My husband called and made sure they had a violin in stock for my 5th grader. They did so we headed downtown. The owner helped us. What a kind and helpful man! The process for renting was quick and painless - we were in and out in under 15 minutes, and that included measuring her for her violin. Would definitely come here again.

Jim at Quist Violins is wonderful! I have had the pleasure of working with his business (off and on) for the last 15 years and have received excellent service each and every time I walk through his door. From purchasing a cello, selling one to a stranger (he let me demo the cello at his shop so I didn't meet the buyer alone), luthier work, purchasing a special order case and even borrowing a cello for a special occasion - Jim is passionate, kind and knowledgeable and I would highly recommend his business to anyone.

We have been renting a beautiful violin for a year & 1/2 for our daughter. After the owner demonstrated at least 3 different violins, my daughter got to choose her favorite. It was an older instrument, few stratches, but played beautifully (deep, rich tone). I was surprised she chose it but it was clearly superior in sound. Thanks for taking that extra time to help us out. This company has a passion to share with their customers!

First review! I'll preface this with saying - I'm not a classical musician myself, but my wife is a cello teacher and plays in various weddings and other events. She wanted to check out the store and I'm glad we stuck around. We were a bit apprehensive at first. When we first walked in, we both got the impression that we were bothering the gentleman running the store (possibly the owner?).
As soon as he realized that we were not just there to goof around, he seemed to lighten up and was very friendly. He has a decent selection of stringed instruments (violins, violas, cellos, and a double bass). His music selection is very good for such a small shop and the prices were more than reasonable. The selection of accessories was also decent - cases, rosins, strings, etc. It was also good quality stuff. Overall, it was a very cool store and worth a visit. just show the guy you're serious and you'll be fine!
