I have dealt with dozens of music stores in 50 years of playing and collecting guitars and amps, and Artie and the gang at McKenzie River Music are far and away the best. Always fair and honest, and Artie knows more about guitars amps etc than anyone I have ever met. This is first hand, logical knowledge and their prices are always fair, taking into account the various aspects of the instrument. I go nowhere else these days and count myself very fortunate to live in Eugene, but I would make it to McKenzie River Music even if I lived far away. Its that good!

I went to the shopping center where this store is located intending to visit ProSound, but that business has closed. I popped into McKenzie River Music to inquire about ProSound, and the owner of McKenzie offered to help me with my issue, which wasn't even guitar-related! I needed to troubleshoot problems I was having with a wireless microphone headset, and he hooked it up to an amplifier and figured out exactly where the issue was. Didn't even charge me. Yay for helpful customer service!

Amending my review as the owner makes some good points and I overreacted. I was disappointed when an older friend of mine traded a guitar (1962 Jazzmaster) in to this store grossly under value, at least half of what it is worth. I immediately called the store (the very next day) and asked to buy it for what they appraised it at, even offering $1k above.
I was told to call back in two weeks as they could not sell it then. I emailed and called back in two weeks and did not get a response. I emailed a second time with no response. I called again and was given the runaround. I messaged on Instagram. I wasn't being pushy or demanding, I was simply wanting an opportunity to find out the price of the guitar and make an offer. Finally, two months later.
I received a reply that the owner was going to trade the guitar. This is not a third party review. My complaint is that I feel like my friend (older gentleman) was taken advantage of and I am upset that I wasn't given the decency of a returned call or email. Basic customer service responds to legitimate inquires. I've deleted the portions of the review that were purely out of anger and assumption.

I found the owner to be extremely rude and mean. I had family that were in town that love seeing good guitar shops. In addition, my guest is in the market for a high end Gibson or Martin. The owner was so condescending, and generally dismissive whenever we inquired about any of the guitars hanging on the wall, like we weren't of the caliber or couldn't afford anything he had in his shop.
In addition, there was another customer in there playing a pedal steel he was looking at, and when he left, the owner made some really mean comments about him once he left. To the tune of, "don't make us suffer through listening to you play a pedal steel if you don't know how". I have had luke warm experiences here before, but this really put it over the edge for me. Why do you discourage people from shopping here? A little kindness, and customer service would go a long way.

Brought in a vintage Martin in December looking for a case. Owner was admiring the guitar until he found out who I bought it from, quickly changed to a very arrogant tone, insinuating I was foolish to purchase such a poorly refinished instrument. Whatever dude, I like the way it plays, don't care about your opinions, I'm here for a case. He said he did not have the particular size i wanted but would get a price quote and call me back.
Fast forward a month, still have not heard back, go in to the store, find an employee who has no answer for me but assures me he will look in to it. Takes down my name, number, and info again. It's now April and I've heard nothing. I truly don't understand this approach to business, but I'll be taking my money where people are motivated to exchange it for goods.
If the owner finds himself reading this- I recommend learning to humble yourself so you don't come across as off putting to future prospective customers and applying your big brains to processing what should be a very simple business transaction.

Been here a number of times and call every once in awhile when I'm in search of something specific but my experience has been more than slightly poor. In most of my interactions with the staff, the older gentlemen gave off at least a basic sense of politeness but nearly every single time I came in the dude at the counter (bald guy, a bit younger than the other guys that work there) would always come off as annoyed and dismissive.
Forget about even attempting to have a conversation with him. Every question you ask will either get a terse, aggravated response or he'll seem like he wanted nothing more than the interaction to be over while begrudgingly grunting out the most low effort reply imaginable while sighing with impatience between sentences, that is if he isn't cutting you off in the middle of a question.
Same sort of treatment over the phone as well (and I can tell when it's him because I recognize his voice). It's a shame because it seems like they have a lot of neat pieces there, but the experience is stressful because I constantly feel like I'm being rushed and treated like a nuisance, and disappointing because the guy at the counter acts like he'd rather gouge his eyes out than spend more than five seconds having a verbal exchange.

Was met with outstanding service and professionalism when inquiring to simply change the strings on my guitars. Was looking for a place that could put on new nylon strings. Most places had days/weeks turn around time. McKenzie River Music was able to do TWO of my guitars SAME DAY and even cleaned the guitars and fret boards for me. I will certainly be going here again.
