To some people, a work is something that offers money the bills. However, to Blake and Jolie the job is more, it's their life. Blake, and sister Jolie Cooper are the fourth generation of Coopers to own and run Cooper Music, one of America's biggest and most popular music retailers. It's only logical that music would be more than a job for this generation. Blake, bass player and singer in a number of rock bands in his youth, started working at age ten when the family store was in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. At that time, Cooper Music sold virtually all, connected to music. Blake, who became company president in 1991, remembers, We did it all then. What ever was hot, guitars, organs, bongo drums, it was there. We provided every thing musical. And so Blake, who recalls sitting in the boiler room of the Cooper building, cleaning horns upon their return from rent and Jolie, after schooling designed and painted store interiors. Not exactly excellent work, they admit, but it showed them how to care for clients and how owners must be ready to perform any job. That goes with the territory.
In 1906 Jonathan Cooper opened the business, known as Cooper Brothers Inc. A former coalmine carpenter, he utilized his woodworking skills to craft and sell pump organs. Then, year-by-year, new products (including pianos) and services (such as restoring them) were included. The growth of Cooper Music always had been evolutionary; making a solid foundation that carried the firm through good times and bad. Economic changes in the industrial north coupled with great business opportunities in the south brought the company to Atlanta.
Even today, that ability to change with the times has served Cooper Music well. For example, Blake Cooper attributes his firm's current success to a decision in the early 1990s to pull back from mall stores of the 1970s and 80s, and to place renewed emphasis on pianos and organs and teaching programs such as Music and Wellness.
Why the shift? Actually, the firm always has worked good with its piano business, Cooper explains, even during the Great Depression and World War II, when new instruments were rare or nonexistent. That was when our restoration business really began to flourish, he says. Most people didn't have the money for a new piano even if they could have found one. Restoring the piano you already had was the alternative.
The art of restoring superbly crafted, antique pianos still has a special place at Cooper Music, now the Southeast's biggest piano restorer. I love those old pianos, says Cooper! They are unparalleled in detail and quality craftsmanship. Its an incredible feeling to see those amazing instruments come back to life.
Blake Cooper, seeing how the business had changed, knew that a shift in product strategy was required if Cooper Music was to grow. That's when he consolidated the company's operations, folding the mall stores into one 10.000 square-foot superstore with three showrooms, rental department and concert hall. There are a number of studios for group and private music lessons. Soon to come were branch Music and Wellness teaching studios.
The main reason this century old firm has survived has been our family's willingness to change, says Cooper. I guess it's a family tradition that started with my grandfather, who in the north, used to sell boats in the summer when the music business decreased. We've always been able to tighten our belts when necessary.
Today clients can browse through a huge inventory of new, used, and restored pianos, as well as digital pianos and church organs. With almost 30 brands on hand, Cooper Music is the exclusive dealer for displaying the largest selection of pianos and organs in the Southeast.
A shining star of Cooper Music's game plan is the Cooper Music Rental Program, which Cooper broadened shortly after taking the company helm. This program allows people to rent any piano they like and try it out at home, for a monthly fee as low as $25.
With the pace and changes in life style, we find people have increased the desire for life's finer things including pianos, says Cooper. This program makes that wish affordable. Surveys have proven the value of music in childhood brain development. The Cooper Rental Program is perfect for parents who want to give their child an opportunity to play the piano before leaping into a major investment. Later, if a client decides to buy the instrument, rental fees can be applied toward the purchase. There is no purchase obligation or time limits, he adds.
Another exciting addition to the Cooper program is Music and Wellness, group lessons for seniors who like music. Attracting hundreds of seniors each week, to several conveniently located studios the adult Music and Wellness classes grow in popularity. Together with an enjoyable and life-enhancing hobby, participants can make new friends with galas that include dinner and a musical program.
Music is therapeutic for all kinds of physical and mental illnesses, says Cooper It makes life worth living for many people, including myself. That's part of the reason why Cooper shares this healing gift by donating pianos and organs to area churches and retirement homes.
Cooper Music also offers clients with services and policies such as free in-home tunings, free in home concert, money back guarantees, service satisfaction, and free exchange within 30 days to ensure their complete satisfaction. Cooper's motto is Follow a simple creed for doing business: customers first, employees second, and myself last. says Cooper.
This client first philosophy seems to be working. The company's annual sales increased from $2.2 million to $6.1 million between 1993 and 2003. And most of the firm's business comes from referrals. Why do people take the time to tell their friends and family about Cooper Music Company? Blake Cooper believes it's because the business has maintained the personal attention people expect from a family-owned business. People deal with our employees a lot of the time, but they also know they can always talk to a Cooper family member as well.
Third generation, David Cooper and his wife, Jean, still keep a hand in the business as consultants. Blake's sister, Jolie, is the CFO. Moreover, company president Blake makes himself available to talk to his clients anytime they have a trouble or question. The Coopers may not know everyone in the city by name-as they did in western Pennsylvania, but they still believe in treating clients like old friends like part of the family.

Tuning and Repair
Report
The Registered Piano Technicians Guild recommends keeping your piano in tune. A piano is specifically made to be tuned to the international pitch standard of A-440 cycles per second. Your piano will sound its best and give you and your family the most enjoyment when it is tuned regularly and kept in proper playing condition. At Cooper Music, we recommend two tunings per year.
Your piano contains items such as wood and felt and is subject to change with climatic conditions. Extreme swings from hot to cold or dry to wet will cause pianos materials to swell and contract affecting tone, pitch and action response. You can lower the severity of these effects by placing your piano near a wall away from windows or doors that are opened frequently.
Avoid heating and air conditioning vents, fireplaces and areas which receive direct sunlight. Your piano will perform best under consistent conditions neither too wet nor dry, optimally at a temperature of 68 degrees F and 42 percent relative humidity.
At Cooper Piano we offer services such as voicing, regulation, refinishing, restoration, refurbishing and piano player installs and fixing.

Cooper Piano has helped us multiple times! I will never stop using them as long as they are in business. We had an apartment fire last year and the movers hired by our insurance did a botched job on our baby grand. (Even though we were told professionals would be used for the piano.) Called up Cooper Piano and they assessed the damaged, repaired what was possible, cleaned, and tuned it!
We recently moved again and they were super easy to contact, fairly priced, and did their absolute best to provide quality customer service. We even had a miscommunication on the entrance to the new house; But they busted their butts getting a third person to help and moved our piano as scheduled anyways. They are true professionals and were life-savers for me on multiple occasions. Thank you Cooper Piano and especially your service department! Shout out Adrian! (I hope I spelled your name right.)

I was looking for a digital piano for the church. Kyle and Andrew were awesome at showing me what would best fit the churches needs. Not only did they save me money but Kyle was super great at responding to me and getting me the information I needed. Once I was able to get to Atlanta to test the Roland GP609, they explained how to use it to helped me troubleshoot the needs of my church. Andrew played and recorded a few songs and showed me other wonderful pianos in the store.
They are both extremely knowledgeable about their products. I even got to hear Andrew play and it was a real treat. Kyle even checked on me to make sure I got back home safely. Wow! I was so blown away by the way they cared and took care of me I had to brag. Great team and great job guys!

Last month, I made a second purchase from Cooper Piano. The first purchase was an electronic piano that I bought in 2004 that lasted some ten odd years. This time I bought an acoustic console and it is absolutely wonderful. Kyle worked with me on a spinet trade-in. He had another customer come in who was purchasing a baby grand but he did not leave my side (although my purchase was many thousands less than hers.
Because I have been in sales and know what it's like to earn commissions, I continued to ensure him that it would be okay for him to help her and I'd wait. But no, Kyle finished my deal and saw it through to the very end). He was knowledgeable, customer focused, and fun to work with. He made the experience upbeat and pleasant with no pressure or intimidation.
He is a talented musician with a sweet disposition. Kyle and Cooper Piano clearly care about each customer, regardless of the dollar amount of the sale. With this top flight customer service, and the impeccable quality of their products, I will most definitely recommend them to everyone in the market for a piano. And, I will return for a third purchase. Emmie Cochran-Jackson

Cooper Piano provides premium service that offers peace of mind and reliability. They've tuned our piano many times, as well as moved it into the house we currently live in. Cooper Piano made sure our piano was moved with professional/experienced movers and kept it on schedule, despite a mixup with the moving details. I highly recommend them for all your piano needs.

The team at Cooper Piano were both phenomenal in customer service and in knowledge. I was able to purchase my dream keyboard and the process for doing so was extremely easy. The team took me seriously, even as a younger customer. I'll certainly be here for any piano needs in the future and I STRONGLY recommend this business! Thank you Mr. Cooper and team!

We were so fortunate to have Brent Wood, a piano technician with Cooper Piano come to our home to tune our piano. He was professional, knowledgeable, polite and friendly and also provided me with much education regarding my piano. He performed a stellar job. I am delighted with the beautiful sound now from my piano!

Just had my piano tuned by a wonderful piano technician, Brent, from Cooper Piano. Very happy with the service and my piano sounds great again! I also had the pleasure of working with Cooper Piano when they received and moved my piano into my home late last year after a long distance move. They took great care of my piano so that it arrived safely at my home. For both services, everyone at Cooper Piano has been very professional and wonderful to work with. I will definitely call on them again for my future piano needs.

Kyle and his team were fantastic! The piano purchase was surprise birthday gift for my wife and the first piano purchase for our family. Kyle showed me several pianos and demonstrated the features of the piano manufacturers. Since the piano was a surprise gift, the Cooper Team took great care to ensure the add-on features were installed in a timely manner and the piano was delivered by the requested timeframe. Kyle is a very knowledgeable Sales Associate. I highly recommend this team. Thanks Cooper Piano for a great experience!

Glad to count myself a customer of this family-owned Atlanta institution. Although a grad student on a shoestring budget, I was treated with a level of warmth and courtesy that would have been appropriate for someone shopping for a 50k grand.
Aaron was extremely helpful and kind, from the moment I walked in to the moment he helped load my new Casio piano on my minivan.
He really helped me make an informed choice: he showed me to the piano I had come in to see, made recommendations as to other instruments that met my needs, and sat by patiently while I flailed around on each of them. I look forward to coming back into Cooper Piano in a few years when it’s time to upgrade; for now, I cannot recommend them highly enough.

If I could give 10 stars, I would. Let me start off with my salesman, Andrew. My wife had initially had her heart set on a Yamaha digital piano.. After speaking with Andrew, he really sold me on the Roland 607GP. He knew all the features off the top of his head, And in 5 minutes he had me convinced. Not only that, but he had given me enough product knowledge to convince my wife, who is the real hard sell.
Payment process was super easy. The delivery team was very professional and courteous, and they did an excellent job delivering and setting up the piano. Now, on to the piano. Words cannot describe how much we love this piano. Andrew was completely right. We would have been extremely disappointed had we gone with the Yamaha.. This piano makes The most novice of players sound amazing..After calling Andrew back to tell him how much we love the piano, he further offered his services and product knowledge to us telling me that anything I need to just give him a call. That is superior salesmanship.I am super impressed with my piano, and I am equally impressed with Andrew and the Cooper piano team!!

My husband wanted to buy me a digital piano for my birthday so we went to Cooper Piano and it was such a wonderful experience. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by friendly staff that helped us sample different pianos and ultimately helped us find exactly what we were looking for. The owner, Mr. Cooper, introduced himself and thanked us for our purchase. Overall, we enjoyed our experience and walked out with the piano I was hoping for!

We made the right decision in hiring Cooper Piano to move our baby grand piano. Link and Douglas took great care to wrap the piano to ensure safe transport, and they were patient with us while we considered where to place it in our home. The process was quick and painless. We highly recommend Cooper Piano!

First of all, this is a beautiful piano store with a wonderful inventory. I came to have a very old Steinway refinished. They worked hard to get it looking great again, and I have the utmost respect for their fair business practices. Their piano movers are pros. My piano is huge and they delivered it with smiles. They are all warm people and have been in business for many decades which says a lot.

Love these guys! We have used them twice in the past 3 years. Once, when we purchased a piano and needed to bring it home, and then again this week when we had to move our piano to our new home. They take great care and pay special attention to every aspect of moving a piano. Hopefully we won't be moving again, but if we upgrade and need to move the piano again, we will be hiring them.

My wife is a piano teacher. We already owned our pianos before we became acquainted with Cooper Pianos but all of our dealings with them have been incredibly positive. I wish we had bought our pianos from them! We've attended recitals there over the years and have always enjoyed their hospitality and professionalism. And we've recommended them to my wife's students.
Today they moved our pianos to our new home. This was nerve-wracking - as musicians we are incredibly protective of our instruments and as home owners we were worried about damage to the new floors in our new house. The move was tricky (grand piano down uneven steps and down loose brick walkways and up a steep driveway) but they took their time to do it right - even called in a few more guys just to be safe.
Everything went without a hitch - super careful and polite and professional and nice friendly guys. We will definitely recommend them to all we know - and especially the moving department. They put our minds and ease. Thank you!

Cooper Piano has been consistently fabulous throughout the 10 years I have owned my piano. Customer service has been excellent from the start including tuning and several moving and delivery services. I am also very happy to support a family owned business that was established more than 100 years ago.

What a wonderful experience here. I bought a piano bench that turned out wasn't exactly what my husband wanted. I couldn't find the receipt and was very concerned it would be a problem when I went in to return it. Turns out there was no problem at all. I was offered a refund but instead they found exactly what I wanted and gave me an even exchange, even though I am sure the new item was worth more.
Not only are these people experts in their field with a showroom filled with tons of gorgeous pianos, but they are super nice and helpful too. It was like doing business with family (and incidentally, it is a family business). Thanks!

Cooper Piano sent Michael out to inspect our piano - a Wurlitzer from the 60's - and found it in excellent shape.said it would last at least another generation. They then moved the piano to my son's home and the men who showed up were on time and extremely professional and careful with the piano. Michael will come and tune in a few weeks. Now my two young granddaughters have a piano to enjoy for many years to come! Thanks Cooper Piano. I am so glad I used your company!

I found this store by googling. Called to say what I was looking for and Jim told me he had just a Casio Keyboard on clearance. After work I dashed over getting there 15 minutes before closing. There was Jim playing "Come Thou Fount" on a beautiful piano. I was shown the keyboard we talked about and less than 10 minutes later Jim loaded up my car and I departed. Personable customer service. Beautiful inventory for most price ranges. I enjoyed my experience shopping at Cooper Piano.

We are highly satisfied with our experience purchasing a piano at Cooper Piano in Atlanta. John Goddard and Silas were extremely helpful assisting us in finding the proper pre-owned piano for our son, who is beginning to take lessons. They have a great showroom filled with a range of instruments from which to choose. They did a great job listening to our needs and helping us find a piano within our budget, without a high-pressure sales pitch.
The piano was delivered as promised in perfect condition and it has been a great addition to our home. We definitely recommend Cooper Piano to anyone looking and greatly appreciate the professional and courteous assistance from John and Silas.

We stopped by on our way up to visit relatives for the 4th of July weekend. Our daughters needed a place to practice as they are preparing for competition. Silas, a very kindly sales rep, greeted us and set our girls up in a practice room. He then showed us an excellent selection of Knabe, Baldwin, Schimmel and other pianos. There pianos are beautifully arranged and provided a large variety of colors, sizes, and styles to sample. We found their showroom to be clean, well stocked with very nice pianos. There staff was especially kind. Thank you Cooper Piano.

I visited Cooper Piano recently looking for a used grand piano. I had been looking for one for a while and hadn't really found THE one. Unfortunately for me, what I really always wanted was a Steinway M or O. I truly didn't think I would ever be able to own one so I wasn't even planning to try one out. I went to Cooper to look, again not expecting to find anything.
They have a huge selection of new and used instruments in all price ranges. It's a good thing but it's almost overwhelming. My salesman, Kyle Smith helped point me in the right direction. He answered a LOT of questions and he wasn't pushy at all. And let me play a bunch of pianos. He left the room so I could have a go and I spotted a restored Steinway M around the corner.
It played beautifully and sounded wonderful. I knew it was the one but this time, instead of wishful thinking on my part, I was able to make a deal. The piano I bought is a beautifully-restored 1925 model Steinway M that sounds and feels exactly as it should, which is good because I bought it to play it every day. Blake Cooper saw me playing it and he took over the sale and we were able to work it all out.
To say I am happy about it is an understatement.
Cooper Piano is basically an institution in Atlanta. They have been operating for nearly 120 years. The fact that the owner, Blake Cooper is there almost every day (from what I can tell) says a lot. His desk is right out on the sales floor in the middle of all the salesmen. He isn't hiding out back somewhere.
Most of his employees including my salesman Kyle are also professional working musicians and his techs are masters of their trade. Mike, who had done some work on my piano talked to at length about it - which is something I really appreciated. They told me what they could about the history of the piano and were totally transparent about all the parts that were replaced during the restoration.
It was a top quality job and the piano reflects that in every way. It was nice to see that they were proud of the instrument and the way it had turned out. It wasn't just something that arrived in a box and got stuck out on the floor. And it wasn't just me with the Steinway. The thing is when I was there, there was a young couple buying a much less expensive electronic piano for their daughter.
From what I could see, they got the exact same treatment and time consideration that I did when I was buying mine. That tells me that the staff at Cooper listens to all their customers and really tries to match their customers with what they want and what they need. You don't see that any more every day. I spent a lot of years in retail in my own family business so I know when I see something done right by people who love what they do - and that makes all the difference. These guys are professionals, who operate with integrity. They care about their customers and they love what they sell. Many thanks!

I have purchased two pianos from Cooper Piano. In both instances, the sales staff and Mr. Cooper himself helped find me the right piano that best suited my needs. I purchased a Yamaha Grand from Cooper in 2015. I play it virtually every day and absolvely love it. Just recently, I purchased another Yamaha from Cooper, for a second home. The piano I originally went to see did not suit my tastes, but the team found me a great piano that sounded wonderful while also better suiting the aesthetics of my 2nd home.
I find the sales team to be low pressure, yet highly competent. They will negotiate on price and help with both the move and the tuning once it is moved. They also provide a 10 year warranty. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the service and more importantly, the pianos I have purchased from Cooper.

After months of research and multiple visits to multiple locations, Cooper Piano helped me find the right piano. Having a wonderfully clear tone, terrific action and being in excellent condition, it’s a grand piano I hope to enjoy for decades to come. Thank you Blake, Kyle and Andrew for your expertise and help with my search. Very much appreciated!

We have done business with Cooper Piano since 2006 when we purchased a piano there. An important factor in our decision to purchase from them was their buyback plan, which will give purchasers full dollar credit on their piano toward another piano from them. We exercised that option in 2019 , and Cooper Piano did exactly that. In 2021, a problem developed with our piano.
We contacted President Blake Cooper about it, and he ordered an equivalent piano to replace it. That replacement took place today, and all at no charge
They are a reputable reliable business. They set a high standard.

I recently worked with Will at Cooper Piano to purchase a Roland HP 704 in white, and I cannot sing enough praises for how thorough and communicative Will was throughout the entire process. Due to supply chain issues, the Roland piano I wanted was in high demand and sold out pretty much everywhere. Will kept an open line of communication and was there throughout the entire process to ensure I was a happy customer at the end of it all. I highly recommend Will and anyone else at Cooper Piano to take care of your piano needs!
