World-renowned luthier Michael Rock, hailing originally from Boston, MA, has made his home on the magical island of Maui, Hawaii since 1981. This is where you will find the Mele Ukulele retail store, just minutes from historic Iao Valley, right before the historic Waiale Bridge. The Mele production shop is just a couple of miles away, in Waiehu.
The Ukulele is a symbol of the Hawaiian culture. Although it is based on a Portuguese instrument the Braguinha, it became a Hawaiian instrument when strung with gut strings instead of metal ones, tuned similarly to the guitar, and made out of Hawaiian koa wood (at that time known as "Hawaiian Mahogany").
Located in the heart of historic Wailuku town, the original Mele Ukulele retail store has been a favorite stop for Maui's top musicians for more than 20 years! We carry a wide variety of ukuleles, from the classic soprano size to the "guitarlele", and we're located just downhill from the Iao Valley State Park, on Kaahumanu Avenue just before the historic Waiale Bridge. Our store at the SHOPS at WAILEA is a bit smaller than our original store, but packed with the finest in ukuleles and accessories.
There is a lifetime warranty on all of our instruments, however, there are things we do not cover. Our warranty does not cover damage to the finish including cracks, splitting or warpage of the wood due to changes in humidity, changes in temperature, sun exposure, fire, perspiration, acids, guitar straps, and cleaning or polishing materials.

I bought a Koa Tenor and a Mango double hole Concert ukelele. I love how both distinct sounds they produce. Hand carried the Tenor back to Chicago and had them ship the concert. Shipment was quick and packaging was good that I received my ukulele in perfect shape. Mahalo very much Annie Tran, Arlie Asiu (greatest uke teacher ), Mike and Cheryl Rock(owners) for the hospitality and service.

I stopped by the Wailuku store and checked out the beautiful Mele Ukuleles. I didn't end up purchasing anything, but met the owner and she told me about the history of the store and answered any questions I had. The young man working there (Skylar IIRC) was helpful and played the different ukuleles I was interested in so I could hear the sound from someone who could actually play well. (I cannot) Will definitely be back to buy one on my next visit to Maui. (BTW, the Paia store is larger and also very good)

I was excited to buy a nice ukulele for once. I spent $400 thinking the ukulele I bought would be great. The same day I bought it, without any chance to play, the peg broke. I asked if it could get it fixed by the time my flight left, and they did. When I went to pick it up they made me wait a half hour even though my ukulele was sitting right there.
I asked if there was any way I could either get my money back, get a new ukulele, or if they could check to see that none of the other pegs would break. I'm writing this because they responded with oh no you're peg won't break again, that's super rare. But Im back home now and just had a second peg break, different peg from the first one that broke.
I am a very kind and patient person but I do not appreciate this kind of service and I hope there is some way they can reconcile for an absurd amount of money paid for a low quality instrument.

My father was looking for an authentic ukelele not those cheap Walmart ones. This place is the right place to buy aunthentic ones. It is expensive because the quality is top notch. The person helping us was very friendly and knowledgeable regarding ukelele. He also gave us some free stuff because we bought a ukelele and a case. So, if you need authentic ukelele, this is the place!

My husband and I just returned from our first trip to Maui! A must-do item was to play a ukulele in Maui and I not only got to jam out with Arlie but we also ended up buying 2 for both of us to learn on! Great customer service and very informative on different styles of ukuleles! So very happy we stopped in!

I was driving to get lunch during my trip last December when I saw a "Ukelele" sign and knew I had to turn around (when in Rome). I play a little guitar but have never played the ukelele before. The store is a bit hard to get to, I had to do several U-turns but it was def worth the hassle! Local musician Arlie (Avery Asiu) happened to be working that day and he's fantastic.
I ended up staying there a couple hours, trying virtually every ukelele in the store while learning the backstory of each line, a bit of uke history, and Arlie's life as a musician in the process. They're so beautiful and sound amazing, especially the handmade/custom ones! After falling in love with the instrument, I purchased one of the beginner ukes with a built-in tuner/pick up and a cute case to go with it and scheduled a lesson with Arlie. Best decision ever! Took it with me to the beach. I even brought my uke with me to Aruba this past month. If you're visiting Maui, you must stop at Mele.

Growing up in Oahu and learning the ukulele during primary school, I've always wanted to go back into the instrument in adulthood. While my family was walking in downtown Paia, the beautiful store of ukulele display enticed me to go in. The manager and owner were very welcoming and knowledgeable. They didn't pressure me to buy or try to up sale. I got a beginner soprano ukulele made with beautiful Koa wood. I'm very happy with my purchase and will be coming to for an upgrade in the future.

I live on the other side but came to run some errands, one being a new string for my ukulele. I was given the ukulele as a gift and didn't know too much about it, just that the strings were different. I had a friend use my ukulele and the G string broke. I had visited a different store and they said they had never heard of a low G string and having one string be steel while the rest are nylon and the worker had an attitude about doing such a thing.
After breaking the G string again, I wanted to visit a different store, I didn't even want to mention that my G string was different as well cause I didn't really know what I was fully talking about being a newer player. When I had walked into the store I was kindly greeted by Carlos, who helped me. While grabbing my new string I was looking around at all the beautiful Mele Ukulele's and noticed one thing, they had strings just like mine!
I showed Carlos and had to explain the story, he explained to me that it's a low G and agreed that it is a more beautiful sound! Carlos got my new string on and tested it out and wow, he's talented! Now I have a beautiful sounding ukulele to practice on, next I just need a Mele ukulele I'm so happy I came across this store, thank you so much Carlos and Cheryl

Cute little ukulele shop. Each time I come here, it feels like I'm visiting a friend's home. It's cozy and comfortable. Eva was so patient as I looked at several ukuleles to try and feel and ask a lot of questions. She gave advice on several of my issues. I finally purchased a koa tenor. I love it! Mahalo Ewa!

We came in looking and Daniel gave us great customer service. He talked to us about product knowledge. My daughter plays and enjoying listening to Daniel play. He shared cool facts and was super friendly. Use the yelp check to get a free bag. Don't forget to ask for Daniel. We came from California and will be back. They have a upgrade program where you can trade in if it's in good condition. They also have a lifetime warranty. My daughter has her eyes on the one she wants to upgrade to for next year already. Thanks a bunch!

Last summer, when I was vacationing with my family in Maui, I stopped in to look around and eventually bought a ukulele at the Mele location in the Shops at Wailea. The shop has an extensive selection of ukuleles of all sizes, woods, and prices. The prices for all the well-made solid ukuleles sold in the shop were very reasonable. The employee was also extremely helpful, patiently showing me many ukuleles based on my wood preference, uke size, and price point.
I ended up getting a solid tenor handmade ukulele made of mango wood. The body of the uke has a beautiful unique pattern with an inlay and the sound is unbelievably nice. It was also the first time I bought a ukulele with a low G tuning, which added a "mellow" sound. It's especially good for songs that sound better when picked. Of the three ukes I own, this has become my favorite. Mele Ukulele will be a definite stop for me whenever I'm visiting Maui.

My family and i were on vacation on maui a few weeks ago and conveniently enough, we were there for my birthday. since it was my 18th i really wanted something special, so i decided that i really wanted to get an authentic hawaiian ukulele made on the islands. when we got to mele, i was immediately struck by the huge selection of ukuleles; what caught my eye the most were the double-soundholes on most of them. everyone in the shop were so patient and easygoing. they really made me feel comfortable and encouraged me to find the one i really wanted. i settled for a handmade koa tenor ukulele with the double sound hole. it had such a rich tone and i knew it was the one i wanted. thanks to mele, i now have a one-of-a-kind ukulele that i'll cherish for the rest of my life as the best birthday gift i could ask for! mahalo annie and everyone else for your kokua!

Visiting from LA and I stopped at many ukulele shops and hadnt found one that "spoke to me". They were all expensive and not made in Hawaii. However I found this place just driving by and stopped in. The owners were not there but Annie was amazing. She was very informative and showed me the different types of Ukuleles and the differences in sound in the types of wood and strings etc. I walked out with a great investment and cant wait to play it.

Mele was on my list of places to go last year, but I didn't make it. So this year we made it an early priority, and I'm incredibly glad we did. I'm a fan of good music stores with character, and Mele definitely didn't disappoint on this score. Walking in the door you're greeted by a clean, well-ordered array of various price tiers of ukuleles. Cheryl showed me a range of instruments, from their solid mahogany models to mango and koa. I'm sure my wife would have preferred the mahogany price tag, but I really liked the sound and looks of a solid mango tenor.
It looks beautiful, it sounds amazing, and it feels great to play. Every time I've had to put it down in the last 48 hours it has been with extreme reluctance. Cheryl gave me a great deal on it, and my kids and I enjoyed hanging around listening to the staff and other customers play while we waited for our ride back to the resort.

I was staying in Wailuku for the last leg of our Maui vacation and had been planning on paying a visit to the Mele store since the beginning. I ended up going to the store twice, the first day getting information on the ukes and the second actually making the purchase. They were extremely helpful in informing about the qualities of the different ukes.
I was interested in a baritone uke and was initially shown one from their Hula line. I interacted with three different staff members and all were extremely helpful as I basically know nothing about ukuleles since this was a gift for someone else. They led me in the right direction and I ended up going home with a Mahogony Baritone Uke. I'm very impressed by their service and was extremely happy with the entire experience.

I am a music teacher who has recently started a ukulele program in my elementary school. Last school year I used a Lanikai (very satisfactorily), but I knew that I wanted to purchase a handmade koa uke while visiting Hawaii. After looking at reviews, I decided to visit Mele Ukulele. I was not at all disappointed; their selection is quite large and their prices are very competitive. Jonathan helped me find just the right ukulele to match my preferred timbre and action.
He patiently pulled out several of the all-koa tenor ukes (both single and double puka) until I found the exact right one. It is evident that these instruments are all unique and they really have their own voice and feel. I can not stress enough how important it is to find the one that feels right to you, and I'm grateful that Jonathan helped me through this process in a relaxed and comfortable manner. Mahalo!

I had several ukulele shops to visit on my list. Mele's was my first stop and ended up as my only stop. This specialty shop literally is the size of a box. Exterior is a bit old and worn. Inside-- it's clean, quaint, and ornamented with beautifully crafted shiny ukes. They have a great variety of sizes, shape, color, sound, etc. I doubt you'll have any trouble pickin your poison. Cheryl and Austin had sold me on one in record timing of under 25 min.
I know they are excellent salesmen because I do not impulsively purchase expensive items without weeks of extensive research lol. Service was a little too good. Too patient, too amiable, and too knowledgeable. I purchased a double holed mahogany tenor uke. Both sound and aesthetics, it's a very beautiful instrument. Couldn't be happier. (double holed is non traditional and sounds significantly louder than one holed.suits my personality) From Weds to Fri (I believe), Austin gives free lessons to customers.
Pretty cool, eh brah. Funny short story: The day after purchasing, I let my friend tune my strings. He over tuned my G string and broke it. I called up Mele. It was a guy on the phone. Told him my friend broke my G String. After I said that, I was laughing hysterically at myself. They guy said people break their G string all the time. Mega lols. Brought it in. In just a few minutes, my G was ready to go.

The ukeleles here are great. The sales person was extremely patient and let my wife try out a number of different varieties before she purchased an instrument. She's happy with her purchase. I must discount my star rating because of what I consider to be dishonest business practices. They refused to honor their Yelp check-in offer off of any regularly priced ukulele purchase.
My wife chose Mele because of their yelp offer which she researched from Los Angeles. When she had decided on a ukulele and presented her check in for the discount they said something that made no sense about how the yelp check-in offer wasn't "activated yet." I would've walked out right then but my wife had invested time and really wanted the instrument at that point. I've never purchased an expensive instrument from a store that didn't offer some discount on the purchase price.
At $400, this was not a cheap ukulele. They did offer a free case with the instrument and I suspect that that's why they didn't want to offer a discount but the salesperson said they offer the case to everybody. I'm not sure that excuses them promising a 15% discount with a ukulele purchase but I might have respected them more if they said that that was the reason. We did get a good ukulele but I'll always feel like we were duped by this company.

Mele Ukulele is a local Maui shop that sells all kinds of ukuleles. The shop is a cute little house that is converted into a store. They all kinds of neat ukuleles - from baritones, concert, suparano - to mahogany, Hawaiian koa, Hawaiian curly koa - to single puka (hole) to double puka styles - to regular to electric. The shop also has 20+ different types of ukulele strings - ranging from those made on the Big Island to those made in Italy.
The owner, Cheryl, was super helpful in showing us the different styles and kinds of ukuleles. Prices are super reasonable and fair. The shop has a lot of National performers (John Fogerty) buying from the shop. Local style, local service, local prices! GOOD STUFF!
